چکیده

Practical design parameters of resonant metamaterials, such as loss tangent, are derived in terms of the quality factor Q of the resonant effective medium permeability or permittivity. Through electromagnetic simulations of loopbased resonant particles, it is also shown that the Q of the effective medium response is essentially equal to the Q of an individual resonant particle. Thus, by measuring the Q of a single fabricated metamaterial particle, the effective permeability or permittivity of a metamaterial can be calculated simply and accurately without requiring complex simulations, fabrication, or measurements. Experimental validation shows that the complex permeability analytically estimated from the measured Q of a single fabricated self-resonant loop agrees with the complex permeability extracted from S parameter measurements of a metamaterial slab to better than 20%. This Q equivalence reduces the design of a metamaterial to meet a given loss constraint to the simpler problem of the design of a resonant particle to meet a specific Q constraint. This analysis also yields simple analytical expressions for estimating the loss tangent of a planar loop magnetic metamaterial due to ohmic losses. It is shown that tan δ ≈ 0.001 is a strong lower bound for magnetic loss tangents for frequencies not too far from 1 GHz. The ohmic loss of the metamaterial varies inversely with the electrical size of the metamaterial particle, indicating that there is a loss penalty for reducing the particle size at a fixed frequency.

Several Types of Antennas Composed of Microwave Metamaterials

We present a review of several types of microwave antennas made of metamaterials, including the resonant electrically small antennas, metamaterial-substrate patch antennas, metamaterial flat-lens antennas, and Luneburg lens antennas. In particular, we propose a new type of conformal antennas using anisotropic zero-index metamaterials, which have high gains and low sidelobes. Numerical simulatio...

Design of Wide-Band Metamaterials Based on the Split Ring Resonator Model

It is shown that the highly resonant characteristic of split ring resonator (SRR) can be significantly improved by introducing new pole pairs to Lorentz atomic model, and by adjusting their resonant frequencies and damping terms. A new SRR cell of metamaterials containing all these required poles is then designed for the desired bandwidth.

Effect of metal permittivity on resonant properties of terahertz metamaterials.

We investigate the effect of metal permittivity on resonant transmission of metamaterials by terahertz time-domain spectroscopy. Our experimental results on double split-ring resonators made from different metals confirm the recent numerical simulations [Phys. Rev. E 65, 036622 (2002)] that metamaterials exhibit permittivity-dependent resonant properties. In the terahertz regime, the measured i...

Description and explanation of electromagnetic behaviors in artificial metamaterials based on effective medium theory.

We present a general theory of effective media to set up the relationship between the particle responses and the macroscopic system behaviors for artificial metamaterials composed of periodic resonant structures. By treating the unit cell of the periodic structure as a particle, we define the average permittivity and permeability for different unit structures and derive a general form of discre...

Dynamic behaviour of concrete containing aggregate resonant frequency

The need to design blast resistant civilian structures has arisen due to aggressor attacks on many civilian structures around the world. Achieving vibration and wave attenuation with locally resonant metamaterials has attracted a great deal of consideration due to their frequency dependent negative effective mass density. In this paper, metaconcrete, a new material with exceptional properties i...
